'A Natural Curiosity' continues the story
of Alix,Liz and Esther begun so brilliantly in 'The Radiant Way' - see rja2108 listed elsewhere in my inventory.
In Margaret Drabble's own words,it 'picks up some of the characters and stories, while adding others'.The scene shifts largely from London to Yorkshire,to the industrial city of Northam, where the problems and opportunities of eighties Britain are vividly encapsulated. The result is an engrossing novel,a worthy successor to 'The Radiant Way' and a quite memorable portrait of the way we are today (then 1989).
From her (author's) note, she had not intended to write a sequel, but felt that the earlier novel (The Radiant Way) was in some way unfinished, that it had asked questions not answered, and introduced people who had hardly been allowed to speak. She intends to write a third but very different volume, which will follow the adventures of Stephen Cox in Kampuchea.
